SurLaLune Book Club: Vote for January

The response was pretty strong for a SurLaLune Book Club, so let's try this out.  I picked 10 recent titles published this past year and put them in a poll at the bottom of the page to vote.  I am going to put them in a list here, too, so you can click through and read more about them.  I would copy blurbs, but I am doing this on the fly and don't have much time to create the list beyond plugging in titles and links, so here they are in no particular order:

A Tale Dark and Grimm

A Tale Dark and Grimm by Adam Gidwitz

Cloaked in Red

Cloaked in Red by Vivian Vande Velde

Reckless

Reckless by Cornelia Funke (The fairy tale usage is much more subtle in this title than the others.)

Sisters Red

Sisters Red by Jackson Pearce

My Mother She Killed Me, My Father He Ate Me: Forty New Fairy Tales

My Mother She Killed Me, My Father He Ate Me: Forty New Fairy Tales (This is by far the longest of the books with 40 tales, so this will be a bigger commitment than most of the others on the list. Not intended to be discouraging at all, but I want everyone to actually read the books and so must forewarn.)

Toads and Diamonds

Toads and Diamonds by Heather Tomlinson
The Grimm Legacy
The Grimm Legacy by Polly Shulman
Princess of Glass
Princess of Glass by Jessica Day George
The Enchanted Screen: The Unknown History of Fairy-Tale Films
The Enchanted Screen: The Unknown History of Fairy-Tale Films by Jack Zipes (This is by far the most expensive and won't be as readily available from libraries yet.)
A Narrative Compass: Stories that Guide Women's Lives

  1. Maybe My Mother She Killed Me could be done in two parts - read to page x in January, finish in February? That one appeals to me, as do A Narrative Compass and A Tale Dark and Grim.

  2. Great choices! I would have voted for several if I could, so I hope we'll keep the others on a list of possibilities for future months.

  3. I voted for "My Mother She Killed Me..." but I agree that perhaps it might be spilt up as Easter said. Or maybe we could read it alongside a few other books if they are shorter (1st ten stories + "A Tale Dark and Grim" for January, next 10 stories + "Cloaked in Red" for February...)? Lots of interesting looking books on this list!

  4. I have read or want to read everything on this list, with the exception of the last one, which I hadn't heard of, which I now want to read... so I guess it's not an exception after all. So I'm happy to coincide my reading with whatever people choose.

I think Princess of Glass is the sequel to Princess of the Midnight Ball. It might make more sense to start with the first one? I don't know, I'm sure there are plenty of people who HAVE read the first one, as well as plenty of people who haven't. Not sure which would be the better option in terms of a book club. :)

  5. Toads and Diamonds is one I've been interested in, but haven't bought yet. I'd love to read it!

I've already read My Mother She Killed Me and each story could be a month's worth of discussion.

  6. My vote is for "A Tale Dark and Grimm", though "Sisters Red" looks really good... and I think Princess of Glass is a sequel?

  7. Voted for Sisters Red but I'd be happy reading most of these :)

  8. Your book selections look marvelous -- I would cheerfully read 6 out of the 10. But with 2 little boys in the house (the smaller one, only 5 months old) I've put these books on my "must-get-around-to-reading-as-soon-as-I'm-able" list. Luckily, my 7 year old might already be old enough to enjoy "A Tale Dark & Grimm" so that will be fun to share with him while the wide-eyed baby listens in...

I look forward to seeing the outcome of the poll and following the discussion as I'm able...
