It has gotten a somewhat slow start, but so far we've discussed the heroines' personalities, the usage of LRRH and even the cover art. I need to jump back in myself sometime today...

And don't forget to be reading My Mother She Killed Me, My Father He Ate Me: Forty New Fairy Tales for February's read! It's quite a different book from this one.

I'm a day late, but I finally created a thread for discussing this month's SurLaLune Book Club discussion. This is our first month and I am expecting a huge learning curve on my part, so bear with me as we figure out how to make this work.

SurLaLune Book Club Reminder: Sisters Red

We are already a week into the new year. Time is flying as I play catch up from the holidays! My real question however is how many of you have read Sisters Red for the SurLaLune Book Club yet? I've decided to host an ongoing discussion--no live chat this time--for the inaugural book club meeting on the SurLaLune Discussion Board. I will open up a discussion Sunday, January 23rd open to all visitors. That's just a little over two weeks away...which gives me hopefully enough time to figure out how to lead this thing. :)

SurLaLune Book Club: January and February

  

Okey dokey then.  The voting ended up with a tie so I was forced to resort to ye olde coine toss as predicted. The results are that we will be reading Sisters Red by Jackson Pearce for January.  February will be My Mother She Killed Me, My Father He Ate Me: Forty New Fairy Tales edited by Kate Bernheimer.  Yes, it is a shorter month for a longer book but my thinking is that we can start the longer book in January and have time to finish it before the end of February so I didn't argue with ye olde coine.

And then because it came in third and I want to read it, A Tale Dark and Grimm by Adam Gidwitz will be the read for March 2011.  This one has been really, really burning up the internet with positive reviews.

The next question is do we want to actually have a chat for the book club or simply set up a conversation on the SurLaLune Discussion board or elsewhere?  I know there are other ways to meet and chat but I haven't investigated them yet.  I am more concerned about schedules.  No one visits this site at the same time. Live conversation is nice, but we will probably get more participation if it is simply a running conversation over a week....also allows people to think and come back with new thoughts, too.

Sisters Red and My Mother She Killed Me, My Father He Ate Me: Forty New Fairy Tales are currently tied for first place as our first book to be read in January for the SurLaLune Book Club. We have 24 hours left to vote at the bottom of the blog page, so please do so if you have not already. Even if you don't want to read along, but have preference as to what you read about. I'll announce the final results on Monday although you can see them at the bottom.  If there is a tie, I will have to rely on ye olde coin toss to decide our reading fates...

SurLaLune Book Club: Vote for January

The response was pretty strong for a SurLaLune Book Club, so let's try this out.  I picked 10 recent titles published this past year and put them in a poll at the bottom of the page to vote.  I am going to put them in a list here, too, so you can click through and read more about them.  I would copy blurbs, but I am doing this on the fly and don't have much time to create the list beyond plugging in titles and links, so here they are in no particular order:

Cloaked in Red by Vivian Vande Velde

Reckless by Cornelia Funke (The fairy tale usage is much more subtle in this title than the others.)

My Mother She Killed Me, My Father He Ate Me: Forty New Fairy Tales (This is by far the longest of the books with 40 tales, so this will be a bigger commitment than most of the others on the list. Not intended to be discouraging at all, but I want everyone to actually read the books and so must forewarn.)

The Enchanted Screen: The Unknown History of Fairy-Tale Films by Jack Zipes (This is by far the most expensive and won't be as readily available from libraries yet.)
