Monday Memories: Magnetic Poetry - Brothers Grimm Kit

Do you remember the magnetic poetry fad about a decade ago? I found my old set a few weeks back and stumbled across this set on Amazon where there are dozens of different themed sets still available. My very literate niece and nephew weren't around for the first round of magnetic poetry so I wanted to share it with them. I was happily surprised to see that one themed set is for Magnetic Poetry - Brothers Grimm Kit. And now I am very tempted to add it to my set. 

And this time the tiles live on the door to my garage which is metal. It provides a bigger canvas and doesn't make my fridge look too cluttered. It's really quite fun. The Sisters Grimm Series by Michael Buckley

 

 

Do you have a middle grade reader who loves fairy tales? Don't forget to share The Sisters Grimm! My 10-year-old niece called me earlier this summer and asked where the rest of the series was on her Kindle. She has a Kindle on my account since we share reading interests and my library is vast. New Book: Goddess in the Machine by Lora Beth Johnson

 

 

Goddess in the Machine by Lora Beth Johnson was released earlier this summer. It is a science fiction novel with tropes from Sleeping Beauty and Snow White. The description includes a reference to a glass coffin! What fun and the concept of mixing those tales with cryogenic sleep has become a subset of retellings, but still not common. This one is higher in my TBR list since I have a soft spot for science fiction with fairy tale inspirations.

New Book: Unravel the Dusk by Elizabeth Lim

 

Unravel the Dusk by Elizabeth Lim was just released last month.  It is the second book in the The Blood of Stars duology (this appears to be the second and final book), following Spin the Dawn which was released last year. And the covers are particularly gorgeous, aren't they?

The books draw upon folklore themes. The reviews reference Mulan and the sewing of dresses of the sun, moon, and stars. I love that challenge in folktales--you most often see it in Cinderella/Donkeyskin variants, but this novel doesn't appear to draw much from that particular tale type. An excellent example of the motif can be found in the Grimms' Allerleirauh.

Help SurLaLune: Folklore Graduate Studies, Resources, Etc.

Hello all,

I've been working on getting SurLaLune updated now that the new site is launched and under various stages of updating and reconstruction. That's a long story I'm not going to share here and now.

One of the pages I would like to attack the fastest is the page recommending Graduate Studies. This page is severely outdated. But soon it won't be! And I need your help to get it updated.

Please share your knowledge of undergraduate and graduate studies in Folklore, Fairy Tales and even Children's Literature or others studies if you like. We don't all approach the topic the same way. Depending on what the final information is gathered for this, I will perhaps change the page title, too.

Things I am looking for:

• Names of schools with related undergraduate or graduate programs
• Testimonials of people of where and how they have done their own approach to Folklore and Fairy Tale studies--I myself came at this through an Information Science degree over two decades ago. I don't have a formal degree in Folklore or Fairy Tale Studies and neither do some of the top names in the field.

Help a SurLaLuner: Finding a Fairy Tale: Husband Forgets Underwater Wife

Hello to the collective memories of SurLaLuners!

I've received this request for help in identifying a fairy tale. While the theme of heros/heroines forgetting their spouses/lovers is a fairly common theme in folklore, this one is not specifically coming to mind. Do the details for this tale bring a particular tale to mind for anyone, especially the underwater kingdom element to it?

It involves a man who travels to an underwater kingdom and marries a princess he meets there. He then wants to return to his home to see his parents, and when he does, he forgets all about his wife and his life in the magical land. Does that ring a bell?

Despite my inability to find the story, I suspect it's a common theme. Any fairy tale at all about spending time in a magical kingdom, then losing all memory of it when the hero returns home would work for the book. Do you know of any stories like this?

I have read many tales where forgotten spouses are a theme. But since they are forgotten, usually the spouse who has been forgotten is the hero of the tale since he/she seeks out the spouse with the forgotten memory--after all, the faulty memory has no reason to go searching since he/she doesn't remember there is something to remember! But I can't think of forgotten kingdoms so much myself.
