The Sephora OPI Mermaid to Order was part of a now mostly discontinued collection from 2009 titled "Mermaid in the Shade." My favorite name and shade besides "Mermaid to Order" was "Just a Fairy-tail." Here are some images from it:

China Glaze Glass Slipper Nail Polish Collection

On Monday, I discussed the BB Couture Fairy Tale Collection and announced a contest. I also promised to mention the China Glaze Glass Slipper nail polish collection that appeared in 2004 and is now, alas, discontinued. China Glaze used Cinderella as inspiration for naming the polishes in this collection. All of the polishes had shimmers or glitter finishes.

Here are the names of the polishes which I admit are my favorite names overall since they showed more familiarity with their specific fairy tale inspiration:

Belle of the Ball (strawberry red)
Stroke of Midnight (blue)
Wicked Stepsisters (deep red)
If the Shoe Fits (clear glitter)
Happily Ever After (glitter purply pink sheer)
Fairy Godmother (glittery pink coral sheer)

I couldn't find images of all the bottles although there are swatches on nail polish blogs if you search for such on Google. I did find an article with a brief paragraph about the collection however.

“We’re also releasing our China Glaze Glass Slipper collection for all women who love to indulge in both fashion and fairytale romance,” says Randi Cooley,
China Glaze marketing manager. “This romantic collection is available in six-piece and 12-piece displays that include an elegant fairytale pillow with a glass slipper, lying among brightly colored nail lacquers with tongue-in-cheek names like If the Shoe Fits, Wicked Step Sisters and Stroke of Midnight.” Alas, to avoid any misunderstandings and broken hearts, the Glass Slipper collection very clearly states: “Prince Charming not included.”

I like that Prince Charming is not included. Helps set the collection apart from the ones by BB Couture and Orly, although the Prince Charming colors are some of the more interesting additions in those collections.

A little more about nail polish brands:

OPI is the most popular nail polish brand in the world, but to my knowledge they have never produced a specific fairy tale themed collection. They do have Fairytale Bride from Spring 2009, but that is for brides and not fairy tale influenced. The company occasionally references fairy tales and nursery rhymes in their clever color names, such as previous releases called Fee Fi Fo Plum, And This Little Piggy..., Goldilocks Rocks!, Rinse Charming and others.

These colors by OPI and Orly can be found at discount retailers online such as Transdesign or Head2ToeBeauty. SurLaLune is not affiliated with any of these stores. I'm supplying the links to help you find the polishes if you are interested.

Fairy Tale Nail Polish and a Giveaway

Yes, SurLaLune is having its first giveaway. See the bottom of this entry for more information.

I'm allergic to most makeup and therefore don't use much of it. However, I am a fan of color and thus love nail polish.

Over the years, there have been a few special collections from various nail polish companies with fairy tale themes. One collection by China Glaze is no longer in production although it can still be found online. I will write more about it on Wednesday. Also, for Fall 2009 Orly has released a six color collection called, Once Upon a Time. I'll show images of this collection tomorrow.

What is probably my favorite fairy tale nail polish collection has been out for a short while and is still very much available. It's the Fairy Tale Collection by BB Couture, an excellent but not well-known nail polish company.

The BB Couture Fairy Tale collection polish names are most heavily influenced by Sleeping Beauty--with a slight Disney influence--although there is also a nod to Snow White with Poisoned Apple.

While these six polishes comprised the official set, several other polishes by BB Couture use fairy tale and fantasy themes such as Fairy Tale Romance, Fairy Blood, and Pixie Dust. The all-time bestselling color is Poison Ivy which was originally slated for the Fairy Tale Collection, but ended up with a different name as a stand-alone instead. It's one of my favorites, too. It might not have been as popular with a name like Beanstalk or Frog Prince, but I like to think it would have.

The BB Couture polishes are not readily available through brick and mortar stores, but they can be ordered from their website. I usually order my polishes from Overall Beauty, a licensed distributor for BB Couture. When I placed my most recent order, I added a comment about SurLaLune to Kim, the store's owner. Kim kindly added three polishes from the collection to my order to give away to SurLaLune's visitors: Prince Charming Blue, Kiss of True Love and Poisoned Apple. I am going to give away one polish every Friday in August. I will give away a bottle of BB Couture on the first three Fridays in August on the 7th, 14th and 21st. Then on August 28th I will give away a bottle of Orly's Enchanted Forest from the new Once Upon a Time Collection.

More Fairy Tale Nail Polish, Sort Of

Well, believe it or not, my posts on fairy tale related make-up are rather popular, so I had to share another fairy tale related nail polish collection that has been announced this past week.

OPI, who currently has the Alice in Wonderland collection available, has announced a limited edition collection of six colors to coincide with the release of Shrek Forever After this summer.


Here'a better image of the individual colors. These are rather surprising since they are not common nail polish colors--nary a pink or red--but they are definitely quirky just as Shrek is.


The 6 nail polishes are:

■ Funky Donkey
■ What’s With the Cattitude?
■ Rumple’s Wiggin
■ Who the Shrek Are You?
■ Ogre-the-Top Blue
■ Fiercely Fiona

These are slated for a summer release which means they will actually be available around April although an official release date hasn't been announced yet.

And as a PS for the topic, Sally Hansen nail polish has a new color called "Fairy Teal" which is available at most drug stores and big box stores like Target and Wal-Mart. It is obviously a teal color, a very pretty one, if you are adventurous with your nail polish choices, if you ever paint your nails at all that is.

A-England's Gothic Beauties Nail Polish

I have posted about A-England nail polish before. It's a double threat to my pocket book since my only makeup weakness is nail polish. I have to wear it to keep my nails from breaking (some things about getting older are a nuisance although I enjoy it overall) and I might as well have fun while applying and wearing it.

Well, A-England is a double threat because (1) it's a great polish, one of my favorites for application and wear and (2) the collections--only three so far--are all literature inspired. Now isn't that an impossible lure for someone like me? Yes, it is.

The first collection was King Arthur inspired (Tristam and Lady of the Lake are my faves) and the second drew from other Legends (St George and Dragon are my faves from this one).

The newest is the Gothic Beauties collection and it pulls mostly from 19th century literature (excepting some Shakespeare), including two favorites of mine, Jane Eyre and Lady of Shalott. (Hey, those are related to Bluebeard and Rapunzel, so we're still on topic here. Sort of!)

The best places for now to see how the polishes look is at the Fashion Polish Blog (one image below) and at the A Polish Addict blog (source of picture at top of this post). The polishes can be ordered from the A-England site as well as Llarowe from whom I have ordered in the past with success.

Now this would be the company to create my dream fairy tale inspired nail polish collection. Orly and China Glaze and BB Couture and others have made some fine attempts but I'd tweak every single collection.

Burne-Jones Dream Collection by A-England

Anyone who has been reading my words in this blog for a while remembers that I have a nail polish fetish. One of my favorite brands has thrilled me again with a new collection this time inspired by the work of Edward Burne-Jones, specifically his Sleeping Beauty/Briar Rose paintings. The collection by A-England is the Burne-Jones Dream Collection with five colors, one yet to be released although at the moment all five are hard to acquire since the nail polish fandom has bought them out as they trickle into the market. I've shared A-England collections before since they are all connected to fantasy and literature, things close to our hearts on the SurLaLune blog. There are no bottle images yet--I will have to do a part 2 post later--but here are swatches with color names that capture the Burne-Jones palette. The image came from Llarowe, one of the US distributors along with Ninja Polish and Overall Beauty, all reliable retailers. The official A-England site doesn't have the collection posted yet.

Burne-Jones painted some of the most famous Sleeping Beauty images in the world and he visited the themes  several times, ever fascinated by this story. You can read a little more about my own viewings here. They are stunning in person.

Now I only wish A-England will create an elegant and lovely fairy tale inspired collection. I imagine it would surpass all those done before and be less predictable, too. Imagine a Catskin or Donkeyskin/Peau d'Ane inspired color... She's already given us Jane Eyre and others... I can dream...

The Mythicals Nail Polish

Those who know me in real life know that I have a *slight* nail polish obsession. I've posted several fairy tale related collections on this blog and this new one isn't fairy tale influenced, but it is folklore/myth related and so, of course, I am enchanted by it thanks to the theme and the colors. It's only missing a great green color.

Yes, it is a collection of nail polish inspired by King Arthur and Camelot from A-England.
