New Book: Out of the Ashes by Alicia Buck

Out of the Ashes by Alicia Buck was released in September. I like the cover. It caught my eye and I wanted to share it here.

Book description:

When Ashelandra's father dies, she ends up a servant in her own house, instead of the Baroness she was supposed to become. But Ash's secret sorcery could be the key to winning back her home and following her heart to a future she never imagined. This fantasy-infused Cinderella story puts a magical twist on a classic tale. Riveting and original, it's a spellbinding read.

New Book: The Most Important Pea by Erin Lilly

The Most Important Pea by Erin Lilly is a new release. This one retells Princess and the Pea. Someday I need to do a count of how many times the tale has been retold from the perspective of the pea. I think there are more of those than of the Princess herself and definitely from the Prince's perspective. Some preview pages are provided below.

Book description:

"Peas are just like everyone else. They are born, are schooled in their pods, and strive to have a purpose." In The Most Important Pea, Erin Lilly will show that it does not matter how young or small you are. If you put your mind to it with a little faith and luck, you can accomplish anything. That includes a pea helping a prince find his princess.

New Book: The Wild Swans by Jackie Morris

The Wild Swans by Jackie Morris is a new release, an extended retelling of Andersen's tale. Morris has offered a book like this before with her East of the Sun, West of the Moon. I haven't seen this new book yet, but I own East of the Sun, West of the Moon. The format is smaller than an average picture book with mostly small illustrations. They are beautiful. I have some sample pages below.

Book description:

This very beautiful and lyrical extended version of the fairy tale 'The Wild Swans' by Hans Christian Andersen is the much anticipated companion to East of the Sun, West of the Moon. With strong characterization of the heroine and also with more rounded characterisation of the wicked stepmother than in the original version, and with delicate watercolor paintings throughout, this is both a wonderful story and delightful gift. Beautifully presented in a jacketed edition with foiled title.

New Book: The Fairytale and Plot Structure by Terence Patrick Murphy

The Fairytale and Plot Structure by Terence Patrick Murphy was released this fall. I'll let the book description and contents say the rest. Look at all those fun tales discussed in the book, though. We get two different Cinderellas and two different Bluebeards, too. How weird am I that the contents make me smile?

Book description:

From the time of the Classical era of Greece and Rome, literary theorists have been concerned with the subject of how the plots of stories are organized. In The Poetics, Aristotle put forward the crucial idea that a plot must possess sufficient amplitude to allow a probable or necessary succession of particular actions to produce a significant change in the fortune of the main character. In the early twentieth century, the Russian scholar Vladimir Propp put forward the radical idea that each of the plots in his corpus of a hundred Russian fairy tales consisted of a sequence of 31 functions executed in an identical order. In this way, Propp had provided a workable solution to the mystery of how that 'significant change in the fortune of the main character' might be brought about. In effect, what Propp had done was to discover the first plot genotype, the functional structure or compositional schema of a particular short fiction, the Marriage fairy tale. But Propp was mistaken in his belief that all plots were the same. Although the exact number of plot genotypes is still unclear, this number is not excessively great. Plot genotypes fall into set categories, which means that the analysis of a few important fairy tales will shed light on the way in which most fairy tales - and by extension most short stories and dramatic texts and Hollywood screenplays - are also organized. This study explores the plots of ten fairy tales to lay the foundations for a complete description of the plot genotype.

About the Author
Terence Patrick Murphy is Full Professor of Rhetoric and Composition in the English Department at Yonsei University, South Korea. He was educated at the University of Toronto and Merton College, Oxford, where he wrote his doctoral dissertation on the history of the little magazine in England. He has published essays in such journals as the Journal of Narrative Technique; Narrative; Language and Literature and Style. His major research interest is the stylistics of the plot in short fiction and film screenplays.

New Book: A Whole New World: A Twisted Tale by Liz Braswell

A Whole New World: A Twisted Tale by Liz Braswell is a new release this month. This is part of the newish subgenre of reimagined Disney versions of fairy tales. I am rather interested in the papers that are going to come out this recent subgenre. Nothing like Disney to be self aware enough to go this direction in book publishing. And then there's the whole dichotomy of Disney fairy tales being the most familiar versions of fairy tales for modern generations when the beauty of fairy tales is their diversity and nuances across cultures and tellers.

This one has not been well-reviewed by readers actually. Interesting to observe...

Book description:

What if Aladdin had never found the lamp? This first book in the A Twisted Tale line will explore a dark and daring version of Disney's Aladdin.

When Jafar steals the Genie's lamp, he uses his first two wishes to become sultan and the most powerful sorcerer in the world. Agrabah lives in fear, waiting for his third and final wish. To stop the power-mad ruler, Aladdin and the deposed princess Jasmine must unite the people of Agrabah in rebellion. But soon their fight for freedom threatens to tear the kingdom apart in a costly civil war.

What happens next? A Street Rat becomes a leader. A princess becomes a revolutionary. And readers will never look at the story of Aladdin in the same way again.

Praise for A Whole New World:

"A magic carpet ride of a book! A fun and unpredictable retelling of the classic Aladdin story, a must-read for all of us Disney fans!" -Melissa de la Cruz

New Book: Hold Me Like a Breath: Once Upon a Crime Family by Tiffany Schmidt

Hold Me Like a Breath: Once Upon a Crime Family by Tiffany Schmidt is the first book in a new series (probably a trilogy) that was released earlier this year. The next book will be released in June 2016, Break Me Like a Promise: Once Upon a Crime Family.

I wasn't sure when I first saw this last winter if it really had anything fairy tale related to it beyond the title. The description, provided below, is more Romeo and Juliet with a definite horror twist to it. Then I saw the reviews, and this one stood out:

Schmidt offers a modern-day retelling of the 'The Princess and the Pea' that attempts to cast the princess in a more proactive, less victimized role than is traditional. Penelope does manage to break free of her delicate-flower mode. . . . The romance at the heart of the book is a sweet one. . . . A decent girl-power twist on an old fairy tale for thriller lovers. (Kirkus Reviews)

So I am sharing here and perhaps someone will let me know if it has more fairy tale tropes than I expected. And I am always intrigued by any novel that can use Princess and the Pea tropes, a true rarity.

Book description:

In Penelope Landlow's world, almost anything can be bought or sold. She's the daughter of one of the three crime families controlling the black market for organ transplants. Because of an autoimmune disorder that causes her to bruise easily, Penny is considered too "delicate" to handle the family business, or even to step foot outside their estate.

All Penelope has ever wanted is independence-until she's suddenly thrust into the dangerous world all alone, forced to stay one step ahead of her family's enemies. As she struggles to survive the power plays of rival crime families, she learns dreams come with casualties, betrayal hurts worse than bruises, and there's nothing she won't risk for the people she loves.

Perfect for fans of Holly Black and Kimberly Derting, this first book in the stunning new Once Upon a Crime Family series from acclaimed author Tiffany Schmidt will leave readers breathless.

New Book: Spinning Starlight by R.C. Lewis

Spinning Starlight by R.C. Lewis is released this month. And wow! It's science fiction. Using Wild Swans as inspiration. That's new! I am excited about this one.

Book description:

Sixteen-year-old heiress and paparazzi darling Liddi Jantzen hates the spotlight. But as the only daughter in the most powerful tech family in the galaxy, it's hard to escape it. So when a group of men shows up at her house uninvited, she assumes it's just the usual media-grubs. That is, until shots are fired.

Liddi escapes, only to be pulled into an interplanetary conspiracy more complex than she ever could have imagined. Her older brothers have been caught as well, trapped in the conduits between the planets. And when their captor implants a device in Liddi's vocal cords to monitor her speech, their lives are in her hands: One word, and her brothers are dead.

Desperate to save her family from a desolate future, Liddi travels to another world, where she meets the one person who might have the skills to help her bring her eight brothers home-a handsome dignitary named Tiav. But without her voice, Liddi must use every bit of her strength and wit to convince Tiav that her mission is true. With the tenuous balance of the planets deeply intertwined with her brothers' survival, just how much is Liddi willing to sacrifice to bring them back?
Haunting and mesmerizing, this retelling of Hans Christian Andersen's The Wild Swans fuses all the heart of the classic tale with a stunning, imaginative world in which a star-crossed family fights for its very survival.
