New Release: The Cottage in the Woods by Katherine Coville

(US/UK Link)

The Cottage in the Woods by Katherine Coville is released in both the US and UK tomorrow, see also The Cottage in the Woods (UK Link). If you can't guess from the cover, this is a novel length retelling of Goldilocks and the Three Bears, perhaps the longest ever written if it is actually the 400 pages listed on Amazon. Goldilocks retellings, especially in novels, are rather rare, so this one fascinates me. And it sounds rather gothic, too, which adds another layer of unexpected.

Book description:

For fans of Shannon Hale, Adam Gidwitz, and Michael Buckley comes a luminous new twist on a tale readers only thought they knew. . .

Once upon a time, there was a girl with golden locks. But that’s just the beginning of this tale. The real story begins with a bear.

Ursula is a young she-bear who has come to work as a governess at the Vaughn estate. Although she is eager to instruct her young charge, Teddy, she is also frightened, especially when inexplicable things happen in the huge house after dark. Ursula is sure she has heard footsteps in the hallways at night, and that something is following her during her walks in the Enchanted Forest. Then there is Mr. Bentley, a young bear also employed by Mr. Vaughn, whose superior disposition is enough to drive Ursula to tears . . . and yet why does he also make her heart race? As Ursula works to unravel the mysteries of the Vaughn manor, she will have to be very, very careful. After all, true love, justice, and a girl with golden locks are at stake. And in the Enchanted Forest, not every fairy tale is destined for a happily ever after.

Today Only: Fairy Tale and Fantasy Puzzles on Sale

You can save up to 50% on select Puzzles during Amazon's Gold Box Deal of the Day. I am sharing some of the fairy tale and fantasy related puzzles but there are several more available, hence the link to the entire sale. Once the quotas sell out, these will not be available at the sale prices. The Gold Box puzzles tend to sell out in my experience.

First up and pictured above is the Ravensburger College of Magical Knowledge - 500 Piece Puzzle which I admit I ordered myself. It is $6.99 today. I already own Sunsout Fairy Tales James Christensen 1500 Piece Jigsaw Puzzle, which is my favorite Christensen painting for obvious reasons. After all, I devoted an entire week to it five years ago this week, see Christensen's Faery Tales Week: Day 1. But the College of Magics is another favorite and with a lower piece count, this is better for the younger members of the family.

Next up is the Melissa & Doug Wooden Bear Family Dress-Up Puzzle. I intended to share this at Christmas and now it is a lower price than it ever was during the holidays. No Goldilocks here, but those are the three bears. It is $8.99 today.

Finally, my youngest niece will be turning five in a few weeks and will soon be graduating to larger puzzles. Ravensburger Castle Fantasy - 200 Piece Puzzle is for her. She is sincerely convinced she will live in a castle when she grows up. Today it is $6.49.

Fairy Tale Wall Stickers

Okay, these have been on my share list for a few months and I want them off! I wish I had wall space for at least one set of these, but the nature of my office is that every reasonable inch of wall space is covered with books. That's a wonderful thing. But it means I don't get to put up much fairy tale art or fun in my office. These are fun. If I had a small child to decorate for, I would choose these although it would be tempting to have the artist hubby also paint a mural.
